Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about NTFP-EP Philippines, non-timber forest products, our programs, partnerships, and ways to connect with our work.

1. Who is NTFP-EP Philippines?

NTFP-EP Philippines (Non-Timber Forest Products – Exchange Programme Philippines) is a non-stock, non-profit organization working alongside Indigenous Peoples and local communities to strengthen forest-based livelihoods, uphold rights, safeguard cultures, and support community-led conservation.

We are part of the wider NTFP-EP regional network working with forest-based communities across South and Southeast Asia.

2. What are Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs)?

Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are biological materials from forests other than timber that people use for food, medicine, crafts, livelihoods, and cultural practices.

Examples include forest honey, almaciga resin, rattan, bamboo, natural fibers, medicinal plants, and forest foods. When harvested and managed responsibly, NTFPs can support livelihoods while helping sustain forest ecosystems.

3. Why are NTFPs important?

NTFPs support the livelihoods, food security, cultural practices, and everyday needs of many Indigenous Peoples and forest-dependent communities. Beyond their economic value, they reflect relationships among forests, Indigenous knowledge, community stewardship, and local economies.

Sustainable NTFP-based livelihoods can provide economic opportunities that encourage responsible forest management and help keep forests standing.

4. What does NTFP-EP Philippines do?

Our work focuses on four interconnected program areas: Tenure and Governance, Community-Based Livelihoods and Enterprise Development, Community-Based Conservation and Resource Management, and Safeguarding Culture. Through community partnerships, technical support, policy advocacy, enterprise development, and knowledge-sharing, we work to strengthen community rights, sustainable livelihoods, and forest conservation.

Women's leadership and youth participation are integral to our work across these areas.

5. Where does NTFP-EP Philippines work?

We work with Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and partner organizations across key forest landscapes in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, particularly in Sierra Madre, Palawan, Negros Occidental, Aklan, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental. Our geographic engagements include long-standing partnerships, community initiatives, and landscape-based programs.
